The role in practice

What a CRM consultant actually does

A consultant who sets up platforms such as Salesforce, Dynamics 365 or ServiceNow for sales, customer service or IT service management teams.

The work

A CRM consultant sets up and improves platforms that teams use to manage customers and requests: Salesforce or Microsoft Dynamics 365 for sales and customer service, and ServiceNow for IT service management.

They run workshops with business teams, configure the platform, build simple automations, write specifications for developers and test with users.

Platform certifications matter a lot in this field, and many consultants hold several of them.

A typical week
  • A workshop with sales or service teams
  • Configuring objects, flows or forms
  • Writing a specification for a developer
  • Testing a new feature with users
  • Preparing a certification or a training
Often confused with
ERP Functional ConsultantConfigures an ERP for finance, supply chain or HR.

Solution ArchitectDesigns the whole solution, often across several platforms.
Full-Stack EngineerBuilds custom applications, usually outside CRM platforms.
Platforms and scope

The same title, very different platforms

Most CRM searches are defined first by the platform, then by the ground every CRM consultant shares.

Education and certifications

The paths into the role, and what really counts

CRM is a field where platform certifications weigh a lot. Companies still look first at the implementations you delivered and the processes you know.

Common paths
  • Business schoolA common path for consultants who work with sales and service teams.
  • Engineering school or master's in ITA common path in France, often valued by large partners.
  • Business analysis firstMany CRM consultants start as business analysts.
  • CRM administration firstCRM administrators in companies also move into consulting.
Certifications
Salesforce AdministratorOften valuedThe core Salesforce certification, often asked by Salesforce partners.
Salesforce Platform DeveloperOften valuedHelpful for consultants who also build on Salesforce.
ServiceNow CSAOften valuedThe ServiceNow System Administrator certification, often asked by ServiceNow partners.

Our view: for this role, platform certifications open doors, and an implementation you delivered and can walk through counts even more.

Your interview with us

A conversation with a senior tech recruiter

Your first interview is with one of our senior tech recruiters, who knows the role, the platforms and the levels in this guide. The conversation covers your own work through real examples, and the case studies come later, with the company. Before the call, we send you the six themes we will cover so you can prepare your examples.

The six themes we share before the call
  1. What you owned yourselfThe CRM implementations or features you were responsible for, and your own part in the team's work.
  2. Your environment and its constraintsBusiness processes, data quality, licenses or deadlines: what shaped your technical choices.
  3. The decisions you madeWhat to configure, what to automate and what to build, the options you compared and the reasons for your choice.
  4. The impact of your workWhat changed thanks to your work, with numbers when you have them: adoption, time saved, data quality or tickets closed faster.
  5. How you work with other teamsYour work with sales, service or IT teams, developers and project managers, and how you settle a disagreement.
  6. What you want nextThe kind of platform, projects and scope you are looking for in your next role.
What we look at
  • Implementations delivered
  • Business process understanding
  • Platform certifications

The same ground for every candidate. For a given role, every candidate answers the same final questions, built with the hiring manager around what the role really needs.

Ready for the next steps. After our call, we tell you how the company runs its interviews, who you will meet at each step and what each step is meant to assess.

Interviews with the company

What the company will assess, step by step

Each company runs its own process, and we walk you through its steps before you start. CRM processes often combine the steps below, and the depth expected at each step grows with your level.

The steps you will often meet
  1. A functional caseA sales, service or IT process to set up on the platform, with your questions and your choices.
  2. A platform deep diveDetailed questions on the platform, its objects, automations and limits.
  3. A deep dive on a past projectOne implementation you worked on, discussed in depth: your role, your choices and the result.
  4. Meeting a manager or a partnerHow you work, how you deal with clients and what the firm expects in your first months.
What changes with your level
  • Senior ConsultantYou know the platform well and explain your choices in simple words.
  • ManagerYou lead the case, choose between configuration and development, and point out risks before you are asked.
  • DirectorYou run most of the interview as a peer, think about the whole platform and connect it to the goals of the client.

How to prepare as a CRM consultant

Practical advice for each step of a CRM process, from the way you introduce yourself to the questions you ask at the end of each interview.

01Introduce yourself in two minutes

Start with the CRM projects you worked on, their context and your part in them. Mention your main methods and tools in one sentence, then close with what you want next.

02Prepare two implementations

For each one, prepare the context, the constraints, your decision, the options you set aside, the result and what you would change today. Say "we" for the team and "I" for your own part.

03Know your platform

Interviewers often test platform depth. Review the objects, automations and limits of your platform.

04Choose configuration first

Prepare one need you met with configuration and one where you needed a developer, and explain why.

05Keep your certifications current

Prepare the certifications you hold and the ones you plan, since partners often ask for them.

06Check the rules on AI tools

Rules on AI tools differ from one company to the next, especially for take-home cases. Ask before each step, and when they are allowed, explain what you asked the tool and how you checked its output.

Questions you will often hear
  • Walk us through a CRM implementation you worked on.
  • When do you build a flow and when do you ask for code?
  • How do you handle poor data quality in a CRM?
  • How do you make sure sales teams adopt the CRM?
Questions worth asking them
  • Which platforms and clouds would I work on?
  • Which projects are in progress, and at which stage?
  • How do consultants and developers work together?
  • How are consultants trained and certified?
  • How much time is spent at the client site?
  • How does the team use AI tools in its daily work?
